Mohini Dey
Mohini DeyDo yourself a favour and take a deep dive into Mohini Dey’s catalogue. A quick YouTube search will uncover clips from her playing from when she was only 11, her appearances on MTV India’s Coke stage, where her playing with A R Rahman, and others, made her a household name in India, and clips playing with the very best of the best players from around the world. Steve Vai, Guthrie Govan, Quincy Jones, Vinnie Colauita, Jordan Rudess, Stanley Clarke, and Mike Stern are just the top of that ever-growing list.
I caught up with her in her new home base, Nashville. She had just returned from India three days earlier, and perhaps because she was still jet-lagged, our conversation turned introspective right from the start. We covered a lot of ground, starting with her reflecting on the recent loss of her father, Sujay Dey, a noted bass player in his own right. Mohini’s father played an instrumental, albeit complicated role her becoming the musician and person she is today. From there, we dove deep into the universality of music, the power and importance of social media, and, of course, the obligatory gear talk. To North American ears, she might seem like an overnight sensation, but she’s put in the work, and there’s been no shortcuts to her success. She’s accomplished the very rare feat of carving her own path, on her own terms. Her music crosses all boundaries, culturally and sonically, and she has a connection to the creative impulse that few can match. You can find all her links here.
